Steven has a particular love of French Baroque and contemporary music.
Under his direction, the choir has favourites like Vivaldi's Gloria, Duruflé's Requiem and music by Karl Jenkins but also less frequently performed works, such as Händel's Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne and Purcell's Love's Goddess Sure. He promotes the choir's collaboration with professional musicians and soloists.
A recent performance of a baroque concert included the period orchestra 'The Amicable and Musical Society' and the internationally renowned soloists Timothy Travers Brown, William Towers and Colin Campbell. In June 2006 he directed Monteverdi's Vespers in Coventry Cathedral.
Steven trained at the Colchester Institute, studying composition with Alan Bullard and voice and choral conducting with Ian Ray.
Whist studying in Essex, he was Sir Peter Pears' choral scholar under the direction of Dr Graham Elliott at Chelmsford Cathedral.
He has performed for Radio 3 and 4 choral broadcasts and participated on commercial recordings. He accepts commissions for liturgical music and larger choral works.
Steven has collaborated with the film maker Gary Davies and had film scores shown at the First Light film festival at the 'TIC', Birmingham and Brighton film festival.
Steven taught at the Blue Coat School Coventry, as their composition specialist. He is passionate about promoting the educational duties of the society and has introduced a student conductor to the choir. He has involved the Blue Coat Choir in recent performances with ‘the Phil’. Steven was recently Head of Music at Finham Park Secondary School, Coventry, and is now Head of Music at Archbishop Grimshaw Catholic Secondary School, Chelmsley Wood, Solihull.
